MURPHY, William Edgar "Ed" 11 Years, 11 Months ago
Black Watch Friends:

Ed Murphy passed away earlier this week. He was First Battalion’s Maintenance Platoon 2ic in Cyprus and the years immediately before and after. He was well known and respected by everyone in the Battalion.

Although Ed wasn't Black Watch, he was as Regimental as any of us. R.I.P.

William Edgar "Ed" Murphy
1924-2012

MURPHY, William Edgar "Ed", 83 of North Grand Pré passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on the morning of 12.12.12 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Ed was born on September 20, 1924 in Moncton, New Brunswick to the late Robert Morrin Murphy and Ida Mae Murphy (Cameron). Ed was very active during his school years in Moncton with the Army Cadet Program as well as being an "under-aged" member of the Reserve Force during World War II. Following high school he enlisted in the Canadian Army Active Force (Regular) and was posted for training to the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers in Kingston, Ontario. During his service he was posted to various locations in Ontario, Quebec, the Yukon, Cyprus, Korea and New Brunswick. Ed was a Certified Engineering Technician (CET). In 1949 he married Margaret L. Pierce (his Valley girl) of Grand Pré, Nova Scotia. Ed is survived by Marg, his loving wife of 63 years and their five children, Judy (Ed) Austin, Moncton, NB; Karen (Randy) Purves, New Minas, NS; Heather (Bob) Whalen, Lower Durham, NB; Steve (Barb) Murphy, Vancouver, BC; Shelley (Rob) Stobbs, Geary, NB.; 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Ed was predeceased by his brother, Robert and is survived by brothers, Donald and Cameron of Moncton, NB.

Ed thrived in his military service and left for a short period but re-enlisted in less than two years. Upon retirement from the Armed Forces as a Master Warrant Officer he worked in the audio visual business in Fredericton and Alberta. While During those years he also gained his pilot’s license and actually convinced Marg to fly with him on a trip across the Bay of Fundy! After moving to North Grand Pré, he was involved in the North Grand Pré Community Association, Kings County Historical Society, the Wolfville Heritage Society, the Grand Pré Historical Society and Chairman of the Board of the Eastern Kings Memorial Hospital and then the EKM Foundation. He was Past President of the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineer Association (RCEME), a member of the Black Watch Association, Federal Superannuation, the Royal Canadian Legion #74, Wolfville, and a life member of the Korean Veterans Association (Atlantic). He was a member of the Masonic Order and Eastern Star. Ed was an active member of Rotary Club of Wolfville and was a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship. He also received the Shorebird Stewardship Award in recognition of his commitment to conserve shorebirds and their habitat in the Bay of Fundy.

Together with Marg, he was a member and supporter of the Lockhartville United Baptist Church and enjoyed fellowship with his congregation.

Ed was dearly loved by his family and many dear friends. You could always count on seeing a smile on Ed’s face and a listening ear even throughout his years of health problems. He will be greatly missed by all. Many friends and neighbours have fond memories of the annual birthday Corn Boil at the Murphy "estate" organized by Ed! Ed was an avid reader and enjoyed sharing books with his reading buddies. Many a war story was told in the porch! One of his favourite times was The Gaither Gospel Hour on Friday nights and his daily news and political programs.

Sincere thanks to all Ed’s faithful Caregivers over the last several years: Ronda, Susan, Sharon, Tina, Shirley, Sherry, Sonja, Penny, Jean, Wendy, Sara, Barb and Lynn; VON homecare and nursing staff; Palliative Care Team, Dr. Ramon Salazar, Dr. Lori Burgess and Dr. Don Clarke. Thank you to Rev. Gail Whalen-Dunn and the Lockhartville United Baptist Church and choir. To the many faithful friends who visited and called regularly we are very thankful for your commitment to us as a family and for making Ed (and Marg’s) life richer by your visits during his long confinement at home.

Visitation will be held from 2-4pm and 6-8pm Friday, December 14, 2012 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where a combined Royal Canadian Legion service and celebration of Ed’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 15, 2012. Family flowers only please. Donations may be made to VON, Lockhartville Baptist Church, Carey Me Program or a charity of choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. On-line inquiries may be directed to www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com.
