Black Watch Friends:

As reported earlier, George Logan passed away two days before Christmas.

George joined the Canadian Army and entered Royal Roads Military College Victoria in 1953. Two years later he moved to Royal Military College Kingston whence he graduated in 1957 and was posted to 2nd Battalion, The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada in Camp Aldershot, NS.

George remained with 2RHC for the next eight years, moving with the battalion to Gagetown and then Germany. In 1965, when 2RHC returned to Gagetown, George was posted to the Army Staff College in Kingston, Ontario. At the conclusion of the staff course the following year, George returned to 2RHC which then was stationed in Cyprus.

In 1967, George was posted to Ghana where he spent two years on the staff of that country’s military academy before being assigned to the directing staff at the Canadian Forces Staff College in Toronto for three years. From Toronto, George was posted to Mobile Command Headquarters in 1972, and then to NDHQ in 1975.

In 1979, George returned to where his career had begun at Royal Roads Military College – this time as its Commandant – where he remained for four years. He then returned to NDHQ and his hometown where he retired from the Army in 1990.

George was instrumental in raising the Upper Canada Branch of The Black Watch Association and was its first president. He was very actively involved in publishing Canada’s BLACK WATCH: An Illustrated History of the Regular Force Battalions 1951 – 1970 in 2008, and, at the time of his death, remained an energetic member of the executive of the Royal Highlanders of Canada, Inc., (formerly the Regimental Advisory Board), the institution responsible for the non-military activities of The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada. He was also a regular volunteer at the Canadian War Museum and with Meals-on-Wheels.

George was greatly respected by all of us who have been associated with him over the past 60 years and his many friends will sorely miss him.
