Black Watch friends:
Regret to report the passing of ‘Harry-the-Hawk’ this week in Fredericton. A much respected Black Watch officer, he served with our Second Battalion in Korea, Camp Aldershot, West Germany, Cyprus and Camp Gagetown. He was the last surviving commanding officer of either of our Regular Force Cold War battalions.

Harold James Harkes
Lt. Col (Ret'd) H.J. Harkes, MC, CD passed peacefully a week after his 97th birthday at the Veterans Health Unit, Fredericton, NB, on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 with family by his side. Harry was born in Listowel, Ontario, July 7, 1925.
Son of the late Luella and James Harkes and husband of the late Hazel (Thompson) Harkes. Harry is survived by his daughters, Judy El-Hakim (Sabry) of Ottawa, ON and Joan Fraser (Jack) of Fredericton, NB. Grandchildren, Ian Lecours (Melinda), Tricia Fraser and Peter Fraser (Crystal). Great grandchildren Jessica Lecours, Kaitlynn Randall (Sam), Owen Fraser, Aadia Fraser and CJ Fraser. Survived as well by his youngest sister Sherrin Digulla. In addition to his parents and wife of 65 years, Harry was predeceased by his grandson, Adam Lecours, brothers Jack and Gordon, sisters Doris, Doreen and Betty.
Harry spent 35 years proudly and courageously serving his country in the Canadian Armed Forces. He joined the Military during WWII as a boy soldier at the rank of private ending his career as a Lt. Colonel. During the war, Harry was the recipient of the prestigious Military Cross presented to him for outstanding bravery at the age of 19. He was a dedicated member of his beloved Black Watch. A definite highlight of Harry's long and distinguished military career was serving as Commanding Officer of the Second Battalion, The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada.
Harry was a jack of all trades, helping people gave him pleasure. He was a life long devoted fan of anything Toronto, especially the Blue Jays and Maple Leafs. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to ALL staff at the Veterans Unit (or "The Club" as Harry affectionately called it), for their superior care, warm friendship and compassion over the last five years. The Club became his home where he was happy and comfortable. In keeping with Harry's wishes there will be no funeral. A private family memorial will take place at a later date with interment in the Forest Hill Veterans' Field of Honour, reuniting with his loving wife, Hazel. For those who wish, donations in Harry's memory can be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
