Black Watch friends:

Regret to report the passing of Paul Greensides on 22 November in Ottawa.
Paul joined the Regular Army in London, Ontario in September 1960 and completed his basic training in The Black Watch RHC Depot with 110 Squad in Camp Gagetown the following spring. He was then posted to our Second Battalion where he was assigned to Support Company, Anti-tank Platoon but employed as company clerk. He accompanied 2RHC to Germany in 1962 where he continued employment as company clerk – initially in ‘C’ Company and later back in Support Company.
On return to Canada with the battalion in 1965 he was assigned to 2RHC Battalion Orderly Room until he went to Cyprus with the unit in 1966 where he was employed initially in ‘C’ Company, then HQ Company and finally back in the Battalion Orderly Room.
In 1968 Paul remustered to Admin Clerk but retained his affiliation with The Black Watch and was posted briefly to CFB Downsview before ending the year at NDHQ in the Directorate of Clothing and General Engineering. In 1970 he relinquished his RHC affiliation when he re-badged to Administration Branch and was posted to 701 Communications Squadron at CF Station Carp (the “Diefenbunker”) where he remained for five years. In 1975 he was posted to Special Investigation Unit, Ottawa, and in1978 to CF Station Holberg where he was Chief Clerk and Housing Officer.
In 1980 Paul was posted to the Royal Winnipeg Rifles as chief clerk of the RSS unit and in 1983 he was posted back to CFB Gagetown. Four years later he was posted to the Air Maintenance Development Unit in CFB Trenton, Ontario and then, in 1990, to the Project Management Office, North America Air Defence Maintenance. In 1962 his final career posting was to HDHQ as Chief Clerk with the Directorate Automated Information Services Coord and Support. He retired in 1995 in the rank of Warrant Officer.
In retirement, Paul has been a very active volunteer for many years with the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping for which, in 2009, he received a Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation (Paul Greensides - Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation - Veterans Affairs Canada)
He was also awarded the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers in 2018

Prior to his retirement from the Canadian Armed Forces, Paul Greensides was a volunteer coach of the curling and baseball clubs on the base. Since 1997, he has been a pillar of the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping. In addition to authenticating service medal eligibility, he coordinated the association’s newsletter and kit shop. www.gg.ca/en/honours/recipients/342-101227
