Black Watch friends:

Regret to report the passing of Charlie Bond on 21 June in Ottawa.

Charlie joined the Canadian Army (Regular) at #13 Personnel Depot in Ottawa in early October 1959 and proceeded to Camp Gagetown, NB to commence his basic training in Depot, The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada. He graduated from The Depot with Century (#100) Squad in May 1960 and was posted to Second Battalion, The Black Watch - also in Camp Gagetown.
In September 1961 he, along with about 125 other members of Second Battalion, deployed to West Germany aboard QSS Arkadia as reinforcements for our First Battalion amid international tension over East Germany’s construction of the Berlin Wall that summer.
In March 1962 re-joined Second Battalion (‘C’ Company) when the battalion deployed from Camp Gagetown to Fort St. Louis in West Germany to replace our First Battalion.
During the summer of 1965 he returned to Camp Gagetown with Second Battalion and remained with the battalion (with “C” Coy) when it deployed to Cyprus for United Nations peacekeeping duties during the summer of 1966.
Charlie subsequently remustered to Admin Clerk and served in numerous locations including St. Hubert, Kingston and Ottawa where his employment included 28 Service Battalion and NDHQ/Chaplain General Branch. In this latter employment, he was reunited with the late Padre John Farmer who had been Protestant Padre with Second Battalion, The Black Watch RHC during it deployment to West Germany in the early 1960s.
Charlie and his wife, Marilyn, have been staunch supporters of The Black Watch Association’s Upper Canada Branch since its founding. Charlie was the Branch’s secretary-treasurer for many years during the presidency of the late Donald P. Ludlow and he and Marilyn continued to support Branch activities until the very eve of his passing.
