WELL KNOWN IWK PEDIATRICIAN PASSES AWAY
Dr. B. Downey Grover - 76, of Avonport, Kings County, passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre - Infirmary Site, Halifax following a motor vehicle accident. Born in Kentville, he was the youngest son of the late Percy Matthew and Nellie Ruth (Morton) Grover. He is survived by his beloved wife, the former Carol Taylor and was a loving father to three daughters, Cynthia, Belgium; Hilary (Eric) Cubilier, Mayotte, Indian Ocean Islands; Rachel, Halifax; two sons, Peter (Jan Assini), Aurora, Ohio; William, Scarborough, Ontario. He is also survived by two sisters, Emily Bigelow, Cambridge; Shirley Stewart, Vancouver; a brother, Harold (Freda), Lakeville; grandchildren, Kerina, Cameron, Erika, Natalie and Audrey; special niece, LaVerne (Gerald) Porter, Lakeville; many other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Morton and an infant son, Downey Bruce. He graduated from Acadia University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1955 and later graduated with a Medical Degree from Dalhousie University. He served with the rank of Captain in the Canadian Army from 1960 - 1964. During his military career, he served in Germany with the Black Watch Regiment. Upon returning to Canada, he studied Pediatrics at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax and at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. In 1969 he and his family moved to Halifax, where the dining room of the family home served as his office. He spent the next 30 years as a Teaching Fellow and Associate Professor at the IWK. He was chairman of the Pediatric Society of Nova Scotia and a longtime chairman of the Cleft Palate Clinic and from 1982 - 1985 he served on the Medical Council of Canada. Until his retirement he was an emergency room Physician at the IWK. After retiring, he pursued his lifelong hobbies of gardening and genealogy with great passion. Dr. Grover was an avid bridge player, becoming a Silver Life Master and made many friendships within the bridge community. He was also editor for a few years of the Day Lily Society Newsletter. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. There will be no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2011 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Gail Whalen-Dunn officiating. Burial will take place in the Falmouth Cemetery. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Shriner’s (Cleft Palate Society). The family wishes to thank all the doctors and the nursing staff of the ICU and we will always appreciate the loving care from the nurses and physiotherapists of unit 7.3, who loved and encouraged Dr. Grover through his hard fought battle to recover. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
