William A. Edge passed away on Monday August 1, 2011. Bill was born in Vancouver, B.C. on January 25, 1921. He moved to Montreal at the age of six and graduated from King’s Junior School and Westmount High School. During World War II he served in the Black Watch as a second Lieutenant but in order to get active service switched to the Royal Canadian Navy. He graduated in December, 1941 from HMCS Royal Roads, Victoria B.C. and served on the HMCS Dawson which joined the US main fleet that liberated the Aleutian Islands from the Japanese. As a Lieutenant, he served on the frigates HMCS Prince Rupert and HMCS New Glasgow escorting convoys across the Atlantic to Great Britain. Following World War II, he returned to McGill University where he graduated with an Arts degree in 1948. He became manager of the Investment Dealers’ Association in Montreal before switching to become an institutional salesman for Nesbitt, Thompson & Co. He was later transferred to Ottawa where he served the latter part of his career as Treasurer of the CBC Pension Fund. Bill was an active sportsman playing cricket, tennis and squash. While at school he played on the football, hockey and baseball teams. He was also an avid gardener and writer whose books, poems, plays and hymns were enjoyed by many. Over the years he was involved in the Ottawa Kiwanis Club, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and The Naval Officer’s Club. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mairi (nee Mackinnon), a McGill Science graduate, and his three children Thomas Edge, Cynthia Phillips (Michael Phillips) and Diana Dowling (Joseph Dowling). His children, his eight grandchildren, Alexander, Isabelle, Jacqueline, Charlotte, Brian, Miles, Victoria and Joseph and his many friends will miss his sense of humour, zest for life, flair, and dignity. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 82 Kent Street, Ottawa on Saturday August 13th at 11 a.m. Parking is available across the street from St. Andrews at the Supreme Court Building and handicap access is available at 84 Kent Street. Cremation has taken place and the remains were interred during a private family ceremony at the National Military Cemetery at Beechwood.
