HOPKINS, D. Charlie "Hoppy" – of Pleasant Lake, Yarmouth Co., passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 30, 2010, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital at the age of 77. Born in Swims Point, Cape Sable Island, on April 14, 1933, he was a son of the late Stanford and Sarah (Nickerson) Hopkins. Prior to his military career, he worked as a pastry cook at the Grand Hotel in Yarmouth. He served in the army from May of 1957 until April of 1977 with the 1st Bn. Black Watch of Canada and the 2nd Bn. Royal Canadian Regiment. He served as a member of NATO in Germany and did two tours of duty with the UN in Cypress as a peacekeeper. After his retirement from the Forces, he worked for twenty years at the Rodd Grand Hotel in Yarmouth, as a night auditor. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #155, Wedgeport, and was also a member of the Pleasant Lake Baptist Church. He is survived by wife, Phyllis Mae (Jeffery); sons, Ritchie, Pleasant Lake; Wayne (Catherine), Plymouth; daughters, Shirley (Arthur Smith), Yarmouth; Doris (Hal Dewling), Dartmouth; grandchildren, Kevin (Rosanne) Cavanaugh, Shelley (Patrick) Huby and Michelle (Kurt) Laskow-Pooley; great-grandchildren, Chelsey and Aimee Huby; brothers, Stan, Picton, Ont.; George, Jordan Bay; sister, Levina, Birchtown; He was predeceased by sister, Mary Nickerson; brother, Havelock; half-sister, Louise Brennan. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Yarmouth. Visitation will take place Saturday, October 2 from 7-9 p.m., with a Royal Canadian Legion Branch #155 Service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral service will be held Sunday, October 3 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Don Moses officiating. Both will take place in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Highland Plains Cemetery, Pleasant Lake. Family flowers only, please.
