Spring 2021

Ladies, Gentlemen,

Cpl Fulton.jpgIt is that time of the year to top-up the Bob Fulton fund in advance of the Bursary being awarded in a few days at the Cadet Annual Inspection to a young, deserving, senior cadet. To date, we have raised over $3,100.00 and last Spring awarded $500.00 to WO Makayla Cunningham.

Here is a short note from WO Cunningham.

"My name is Makayla Cunningham, and I am honored to be September 2020’s recipient of the Bob Fulton Memorial bursary. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the many donors who make the Robert Fulton Memorial Fund possible. Thanks to this bursary, part of my tuition fees and books for this first year of college were paid for.

I am currently in my first year of a two-year program of Social Sciences - Child Studies. My dedication and passion for child studies have allowed me to achieve an 89% average and has earned me a position on the prestigious Honors list in my first semester – a success I hope to repeat in the second semester. In addition to my academic pursuits, I remain actively involved with the Black Watch Royal Highland Cadets Corps as a WO, I continue with my Highland dancing classes at the Cameron School of Dance, as well as continue working with, Les Anciennes Troupes de Montréal as a Highland dancer and drummer. After my scheduled graduation, May 2022, I plan to pursue undergraduate studies at McGill University either in Humanities and Social Sciences or Education.

In closing, I cannot express my gratitude enough, and I want you to know that your generous support will see me achieve my dreams.

Sincerely,

Makayla Cunningham"

The Bob Fulton Memorial Fund

The bursary was established in 2014 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Black Watch Cadet Corps No. 2497 in recognition of the outstanding influence that Bob Fulton, founding Cadet No. 1, had on the development of a large number of cadets, especially drummers and pipers, over his years of service. The Memorial Fund will remember Bob Fulton by encouraging young cadets to attain the same standards he set in devotion to the Corps, to personal discipline and deportment, and to leadership.

Background
Bob Fulton, the son of a World War II Black Watch Senior NCO veteran, joined the Black Watch Cadet Corps, having learned drums under the Boys’ Pipes & Drums program established by the St. Andrew’s Society of Montreal in 1953. He subsequently joined the Regimental Pipe Pipes & Drums and soon became lead drummer. He was always recognized for his immaculate dress, his demands for punctuality and “keeping your word”, and for high standards of drill and musical performance. He spurred them on to achieve much more than they thought they were capable of and thus helped set them on their personal way with self-confidence and self-discipline. When not on the parade square, he was a fun loving and caring individual, much different to this his façade of a strict Sergeant-Major.

The Bob Fulton Memorial Fund is used offer an annual bursary to an outstanding cadet who reflects the ideals left to us by Bob Fulton. The funds accumulated will be invested by the Black Watch of Canada Foundation and distributed based on the recommendation of a committee composed of representatives of the Cadet Corps, the Foundation, the Fulton family and people who knew Bob. The bursary is aimed to begin in the area of $500, some coming from the endowment fund, some from an annual campaign. The bursary is available to any senior member of the Cadet Corps to assist in pursuing their post-secondary education and will only be awarded once to a cadet.

A note from the 2019 recipient

I am writing to express how thankful I am to you for awarding me the Fulton memorial bursary. I was thrilled to learn of my selection for this honour and I appreciate everyone’s support given to me.

I will be enrolling into Adults education to complete my diploma and then continue my education in college and university as a physical therapist. The financial assistance provided will help me with books and supplies needed for school. Thank you again for your support. I promise that I will pass on the generosity and knowledge that I have learned from you. I would not be the young leader I am today without the help you have given me.

Sincerely,

Gregory Alek Abedi
