Well here we go I have asked on many occasions and to many members past and present WHY IN THE "*?%$ DO WE NOT STAND FOR OUR REGIMENTAL MARCH PAST and the answer that we never do or we never did is simply not acceptable when I have the question asked to me by young soldiers.So can someone help ,The closeest that I could come up with is that we do not have to show our loyalty to our Regiment in our own Mess OK I can accept that but when we our anywhere else and we do not stand it is simply put WRONG . So that is my rant for today so help please Cheers Mike

We agree Mike. When we are in our own Mess and there are other Units there - we SHOULD stand. When we are outside our Mess, we SHOULD stand. To us, it's like standing for our National Anthem. Standing for our Regimental March Pass is like honouring our Regiment - we always stand for it - no matter where we are at the time, we just believe we should. Rick and Sherry

Rick said that when you are in your own Mess without other Units there and just BW, then you do not have to - for whatever reason, that's the way it's always been. I guess it's up to the individual if he or she decides to stand then - like we do and I have seen others do the same.

As you can see this is something that is not clear so it should be made clear ,on an indivdual level ok, but on the Regemental level it shuld be all or none, or made crystal clear ,on association events .I have seen both up and down but again " THE WAY IT IS , OR IT ALWAYS WAS"IS NOT AN ANSWER We were always taught if you do not know I will find the answer for you so I hope someone can help with this answer thanks again Mike

I feel we should always stand. It shows a little respect for all those who have made the supreme sacrifice under that regiments name. It's just the proper thing for gentlemen to do. That is my opinion.

"Highland Laddie", our regimental march past is also the march past of more than a dozen regiments in the old British Empire (Commonwealth). It is not a national anthem. In the USA "God Save the Queen" is "My Country 'Tis of Thee". Nobody stands for it, even British citizens - UNLESS the tune is played in context with Great Britain or the monarchy.

Years ago when I was a junior officer (more years than I care to remember) a senior officer explained to me that we stand for our march past when we are at a public military parade or function or "On Parade", (not mess dinners). Probably the best rule about protocol for "Highland Laddie" is to do as you see fit but don't expect everyone else to follow your lead. We are not the USMC. (No insult meant to that august organization but we are a REGIMENT, not a corps.)

I agree with Maj Starz. That is also what we, in my era, were taught. I would make one precision though in that we would normally stand if at a mess dinner outside of our unit or at our own dinner with other units in attendance. I guarantee you; if you stand all will follow. Andy
