SCHIJNS, Edward James – 80, of Hopewell, N.S.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ed Schijns on October 5, 2012, after a brief battle with cancer. Born in Stellarton NS on September 11, 1932, he was the son of the late Joseph and Ivy (Oliver) Schijns. Beloved husband for 57 years to Eva (Horton), dearly loved father of Debbie Northrup (Larry), Walden; John Schijns (Joyce), Stewiacke; Marie Julian, Moncton; Michael Schijns(Deborah), Calgary; Edward Schijns Jr. (Cheryl), Halifax; Phyllis Boutilier (Gary), Beaver Bank. He also leaves his 16 cherished grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and was a dear brother of Geraldine Duffy. He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Orlando and Ferdinand, 1 sister Lydia Maxwell.
Ed was very proud to be a family man, husband, dad and papa. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 25 years, stationed in CFB Gagetown N.B., Halifax N.S and Calgary A.B. His love and respect for the military was obvious to anyone who knew him. Ed was a passionate member of several legions more recently the Stellarton Legion Branch 28 where he was president for 4 years. Ed could often be found tinkering in his garage, sharing stories with friends and ensuring the many stray animals who dropped by got something to eat. He was widely loved for his generous spirit, wit and will be greatly missed by all.
Visitation will be held at The H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, 18 Acadia Av Stellarton N.S. on Monday, October 8th, 2012 from 2:00pm-4:00pm and from 7:00pm – 9:00pm. A Royal Canadian Legion Service will take place at 6:30pm. Family and friends are invited to honour and remember Ed’s life at the funeral home on Tuesday, October 9th, 2012 at 2:00pm. A family burial is to follow at the Hopewell Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made in Ed’s memory to Royal Canadian Legion Branch 28.
All who had the pleasure of knowing Ed would have a story to tell and hold fond memories of their time together. To the Regiment!
