Black Watch and RCR friends:
Regret to report that Dave Ells passed away this afternoon in Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville NS.
Dave served his two regiments with distinction.
He was posted to First Battalion, The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada in Camp Aldershot on completion of his Basic Officer Training at the RCS of I Camp Borden in 1955. He remained with 1RHC when it deployed to West Germany in 1958 (the year he married Pippa) and, on completion of that tour in 1961, was posted to the RCS of I, Camp Borden. From there he attended Canadian Army Staff College in Kingston, ON in 1966 and afterwards was posted back to 1RHC as a company commander.
He left 1RHC in 1969 and eventually ended up in 2CIBG HQ in CFB Petawawa prior to taking command of Third Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment in 1975. He commanded 3RCR during the Summer Olympics in Kingston in 1976, immediately after which he took the battalion to Cyprus for a winter of peacekeeping.
Following his tour as CO 3RCR, Dave commanded the Infantry School in CFB Gagetown and, on promotion to Colonel, was appointed Army Attaché at Canadian Defence Liaison Establishment London.
After retirement from the CAF, Dave was appointed to the Veterans Review and Appeal Board (VRA
of Veterans Affairs Canada.
Dave was a good soldier and a good friend.
