Baxter Price Steeves
1933 - 2021
It is with profound sadness and deepest regrets that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, papa, great grandfather and friend Baxter Price Steeves. Baxter recently suffered a fall and as a result of his injuries in this accident and other medical issues Baxter passed away peacefully in the palliative care unit of the Aberdeen hospital on the morning of June 3rd 2021. Baxter fought courageously over a very long period of time from the many aliments that plagued him and never complained. Baxter grew weary and after a life of service in many areas, now is his chance to rest. Baxter was born in Hillsborough New Brunswick on March 30, 1933 and spent his early years in that community. Sometime later his family moved to Stellarton, Nova Scotia where he would settle and meet the one true love of his life Dorothy Isabelle MacDonald. Baxter entered the Canadian Armed Services some time after and was a member of the esteemed Royal Highland Black Watch Regiment of Canada. Baxter was a very proud member of the Canadian Armed Forces and spoke with pride regarding his time in service of his country. After the military he went on to have a career in the retail food service industry most notably with Sobeys Inc where he managed front line stores and for many years was the face of Sobeys in Pictou County. This is where he started to make a name for himself, by serving the people. He would often tell stories of some of the wonderful people he worked with and some of the best bosses he could have ever asked for. His true calling still awaited him, but the cost of this was high. Baxter battled alcoholism for many years and the price for this battle was costly on many avenues. This unfortunate situation paved the way for Baxter to do wonderful things with his life. His demons gave him the knowledge to save the lives, families, careers and futures of countless people throughout Nova Scotia. Baxter became an addictions councilor for the province of NS, this was his greatest gift of service. He helped many people regain their lives back. He could help them when others could not. He was successful because he himself had come back from the dark road of addiction and he truly wanted to give others hope. He could prove that there was life after addiction. Baxter was predeceased by this parents Elton and Myrtle Steeves as well as his brothers Roderick and George. As Baxter moves on he leaves behind a large and loving family who are devastated by this loss. His wife, Dorothy, sons John (Anne), David (Sally) and daughter Kenda (John) MacLeod, along with many grand children and great grandchildren who will miss the stories, laughs and card games they had with Papa. The mantra in which Baxter lived his life and retained his faith in God and other people comes down to a single phrase, “ One day at a time “ . This phrase brought him back from the brink and gave him the tools to save people. This is how we, the family, will move forward with our life without him; we will heal “One day at a time.” Due to current Covid restrictions no visitation or public services will take place. When restrictions are lifted we will be holding a celebration of life gathering and we invite all to join us at that time. We look forward to seeing you then.
