Black Watch friends:

Regret to report the passing of Bill Newlands in Ottawa on 30 July.

Bill accompanied our Second Battalion RHC to Korea in 1953 as 2ic ‘C’ Company. On return to Canada he held staff appointments and attended staff college then returned to 2RHC in 1959 as OC ‘B’ and later Support companies. From 2RHC Gagetown he was posted to a UN Egyptian-Israeli mission and later to HQ 4CIBG as Brigade-Major which was followed by a posting to HQ 4 (UK) Division with the British Army on the Rhine. In 1966 he was appointed Commanding Officer of our First Battalion RHC and took the unit to Cyprus the following year. From 1RHC Gagetown he was posted to NDHQ where he held a variety of staff appointments, interrupted by a tour at the United Nations in New York, before retiring from the CAF. In retirement, he served on the Regimental Advisory Board of The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada.

Following his retirement, he and Catherine moved to Kingston where he became an avid sailor and also gave his time to a host of volunteer activities such as the church choir of St. Mary's Cathedral, the hospital board of Hotel Dieu, and meal programs for the homeless. and he. He loved to read and travel and dabbled with the piano and painting. He was also a skillful cabinet-maker, he could build or fix anything, and was an inspiration to his family. Bill was a devoted father and husband whose love and dedication to his dear wife Catherine carried them through her decade-long struggle with dementia.

The family thanks the wonderful team of nurses, doctors, and physiotherapists at St. Vincent's Hospital, Ottawa, for their excellent care of Bill in his last months, and weeks. A funeral will be held on Saturday 14 August 11 am, at St. Basil's Church, 940 Rex Avenue, Ottawa. Due to Covid restrictions, there will be no reception.
