DODGE, David W.R. 14 Years, 10 Months ago
Black Watch Friends:

Regret to inform you that Lt-Col (Ret) David Dodge passed away this afternoon in Ottawa’s Queensway-Carleton Hospital.

David had a truly interesting military career.

In September 1939 he joined the 12th Manitoba Dragoons as a Trooper and “Provisional 2nd Lt” and became the regiment’s Quartermaster.

In January 1941 he was posted to 35 Infantry Training Centre in Winnipeg as a reinforcement officer for the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada. Later that year he was promoted to Lieutenant and posted to the UK where he was employed in personnel selection duties – primarily with the Canadian Forestry Corps in Scotland. In 1942 he was posted to the Cameron Highlanders of Canada where he was employed as a rifle and anti-tank platoon commander.

Early in 1943 David was promoted to Captain and in September he was posted to the West Nova Scotia Regiment in Italy where he served as a rifle company 2ic and commander. While with the West Novas he was wounded in the battle of The Gulley.

In 1944 David returned to England and subsequently rejoined the Cameron Highlanders in France but was hospitalized back to England for a variety of illnesses – including malaria and diphtheria.

In 1946 he married Lt N/S Doreen Johnson and was returned to Canada on posting to the Parachute Training Centre. For most of the next year he was a student at the US Army Intelligence School in Ft Riley, Kansas, after which he was re-promoted Captain and posted to the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada as (what is now) RSS officer.

In 1950 David attended Canadian Army Staff College in Kingston, and in 1952 was posted to 2nd Canadian Highland Battalion ( 2CHB ) in Aldershot, NS. He went to Korea with 2CHB/2RHC as a rifle company commander where he earned the title “Dodge of Kamak-San”.

In 1959 he was posted to 1st Battalion, The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada, and went to Germany with the unit and became its Second-in-Command until returning to Canada in 1962. Before retiring in 1970, David served with the United Nations Truce Supervisory Organization (UNTSO) in the Middle East and several AHQ/NDHQ appointments.

DODGE, David W.R. Lt. Col. (Ret'd.)

With love, joy and true devotion, we honour the life of David Wesley Raymond Dodge. He was a man of honour, wisdom and strong family values. His life will be celebrated by his much loved wife Doreen, of 63 years and children Barbara (Bill), Brenda (Bob), Ian, Peter (Bette-Anne). He will be lovingly remembered by his 8 grandchildren, Jordan, Brier C., Jenny, Mindy, Katie, Brier D., Claire and Cameron. David was born in Birtle, Manitoba, on January 7, 1919. He grew up playing hockey on the prairies, joined the infantry highlanders and was involved in active duty during WWII. David went on to have three careers. A proud professional officer in the Black Watch Regiment, a civil servant who worked tirelessly to assist Canadians in trouble abroad and finally a beekeeper with prize winning honey. David left this world on January 28, 2010, peacefully in hospital. We love you. Friends may call at the Bells Corners United Church, 3955 Richmond Road, Nepean on Wednesday, February 3rd, from 1 p.m. until time of funeral service at 2 p.m. For those who wish, please consider a donation in David's memory to the Canadian Cancer Society. Condolences, tributes or donations may be made at www.tubmanfuneralhomes.com.
