It is with great sadness that the family of J. Bernard Hynes announces his death at White Rapids Manor on Friday, October 22, 2010 at the age of 85. Born in Searston, NL on November 18th, 1924, he was the husband of the late Sadie Hynes.
Bernard leaves behind his children, Barbara (Bob) Calder and Leo (Dawn) Hynes of Oromocto; grandchildren, Jennifer (Remi), Nicholas (Nicky) and Tony (Julie); great grandchildren, Joshua, Brianna, Evan and Taylor; and sister, Pat Sheilds. In addition to his wife, Sadie, Bernard was predeceased by his parents, John and Catherine (Downey) Hynes; grandson, Gregory Calder and 8 of his brothers and sisters.
Bernard joined the Military in November of 1942 and went on to serve as a tank driver in the Italian and Northwestern Europe Campaigns during the Second World War as a member of the British Columbia Dragoons. He remustered to the vehicle tech trade on June 2, 1946 in the corps of Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RCEME). He served with 2nd Battalion, The Black Watch (RHC), 2 Field Squadron (RCE), 4 service Battalion, FMC HQ and with the United Nations in Egypt and Cyprus.
Between 1968 and 1971 Bernard assisted the New Brunswick Ministry of Labour in training civilian and military technicians to prepare for interprovincial licenses and was asked to help establish provincial automotive technician standards and specifications. He also aided in the creation of the Base Auto Hobby Club.
In July of 1997 he was awarded the Order of Military Merit (OMM)
Visitation will take place at Oromocto Funeral Home, 108 Winnebago St., on Wednesday, October 27th, 2010 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 93 will hold a tribute service at 7 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Thursday, October 28th, 2010 from St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Fr. Mark Trzop officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bernard's memory can be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
