Black Watch Friends:
It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Syd Smith last Sunday 23 November.
Syd graduated from New Glasgow High School in 1955 and from St. FX in 1959 under the ROTP. He then joined Second Battalion, The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada and served in ‘A’ Company until he was posted to our Regimental Depot in 1961 when Second Battalion deployed to Germany.
Syd left the Army in 1963 to work for Shell Canada in Montreal. He subsequently went into business for himself.
Syd remained loyal to The Black Watch in the years after his retirement from the Army. He attended our last Atlantic Branch reunion in Aldershot in 2013, and he phoned me just last month to report that his health had deteriorated. Syd and I became friends in the New Glasgow High School Cadet Corps and Aldershot Cadet Camp.
