Black Watch and RCR friends:
Regret to report that Basil McAllistar passed away on 15 September.
Basil joined the Canadian Army (Regular) in 1954 and served with Second Battalion, The Black Watch RHC in Aldershot, Gagetown, Germany and Cyprus – mostly in Signals Platoon - before re-badging to Second Battalion The RCR in 1970. He subsequently served with 2RCR in Gagetown, Montreal (FLQ Crisis), Jamaica and Cyprus.
Basil was exposed to Agent Orange in 1965/66 in Gagetown and eventually developed cancer as a consequence. After a lengthy and frustrating fight with VAC, he eventually took his case to civil court where he won his battle for compensation in late 2014. His court case made national news and local headlines.
Basil was president of the New Brunswick Chapter of our Black Watch Association for a number of years after his retirement from the CAF.
Basil was a great soldier whose determination was a fine example of his leadership.
